Best Types of Hardwood Floors

All hardwood flooring looks alike from the surface, but make no mistake: there are two distinct types of hardwood floors to consider.

• Solid hardwood flooring is exactly what it sounds like - each plank contains a single, solid hunk of natural hardwood. Durable and long-lasting, solid hardwood floors can be refinished repeatedly. Life in Michigan calls for harder wood species to achieve the best long-term results. Our high humidity levels during the summer months mean it's critical to maintain consistent climate control to prevent your floors from warping or shrinking. Your solid hardwood floor will need time to acclimate to your space before it's installed. Solid hardwood floors cannot be used below grade. 

• Engineered hardwood floors are a newer take on an old favorite. Each plank is built in several layers, with the top layer containing a premium cut of natural hardwood. Though not as valuable as solid hardwood floors, engineered hardwood flooring is a lot more forgiving since it's less likely to warp during climate shifts. Engineered hardwood floors can also be installed in below-grade areas, like in a finished basement. Only certain engineered products are candidates for refinishing, depending on the thickness of their top layer. 

Hardwood Floors, Humidity, and Your Home 

Hardwood floors aren't fond of humidity, but with some careful thought and planning, the two can easily coexist.
